How does it work?
Recycle Your Cycle work with the prison students to repair and refurbish old bicycles which have been kindly donated. 90% of all donated bicycles are refurbished and what can’t be is used for parts are then disposed of under WEEE regulations.
The refurbished bicycles are sold back through the charity retail sector enabling them to raise funds for their particular causes. Currently we work with over 30 charities who have over 150 shops throughout England and Wales and the number of our charity partners is growing all the time.
Our charity partners are pro-actively asking their local community for donations of unwanted bicycles and we also have a scheme set up with local bicycle retailers to encourage people to recycle old bicycles when they purchase a new one. Another source of donations comes from educational establishments where students often leave their bicycles at the end of their course and this provides the perfect way to dispose of them. In addition, we are developing relationships with local Police stations to collect unclaimed bicycles.
It’s a win-win – Prisoner train and charities gain!
Recycle Your Cycle is now working with the following prisons: HMP Wandsworth, HMP Hewell, HMP Cardiff, HMP Nottingham, HMP & YOI Swinfen, HMP Stocken, and HMP Liverpool. In addition to bicycles we have now set-up a workshop to refurbish high end vacuum cleaners e.g. Dyson, Henry etc, these products are now available through our charity partners at competitive prices.
